EXHIBITION
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: ICONS FROM JERUSALEM
The exhibition features a collection of Levantine and Jerusalemite icons, paintings, and pilgrim souvenirs that showcase Jerusalem's vibrant artistic movement. These artworks emerged when the Holy Land was a spiritual center for three monotheistic religions and a unique artistic hub.
Jerusalemite iconographers established workshops, distributing their creations to churches across the Arab Levant, while pilgrims often took home these iconic souvenirs. The Jerusalem School's icons have a distinct style, differing from Byzantine, Greek, and Aleppine traditions. During this peak period, religious tourism surged, leading to various commemorative artworks, including maps of the Holy Land and icons crafted from fish bones and shells.
Notable among these are the commemorative maps of Jerusalem (Proskynetarion), extensively researched by Dr. Mahmoud Zibawi.
This exhibition is a valuable resource for those interested in Eastern Christian icons, fostering discussions about the artworks' historical, political, and social contexts.
THE EXHIBITION RUNS UNTIL 17 JANUARY 2026
