‘Revealing The Sacred: The Story of the Jerusalem Icons’ with Mahmoud Zibawi

Researcher Dr. Mahmoud Zibawi will offer an in-depth reading of the icons on display at Dar El-Nimer.

In 1969, Sursock Museum organized a dedicated exhibition of local icons, marking the first spark of public awareness for this heritage, which had long remained largely unknown despite its constant presence in Byzantine-rite churches.

Several artistic events followed, exploring this rich artistic production, culminating in the exhibition ‘On Earth as in Heaven’ — a new milestone in this ongoing journey — which brings together a collection of icons, most of them from Palestine.

Dr. Zibawi will present the key features of this collection, divided into two distinct sections:

Traditional icons belonging to the local school known as the ‘Jerusalem School’ and large-scale paintings depicting various themes in a style known as ‘Souvenir of the Holy Land’.
