Dictaphone Group was asked to guest edit the Fall 2013 online edition of ArteEast. Based on ‘This Sea Is Mine’ project (2012), they discussed the issue of access to the sea and public space in several Arab cities.

Drawing on recently found film rushes, rare documentary footage and clips of Third Cinema, Mohanad Yaqubi will introduce a fascinating and often neglected world that engages with the depth of Palestine’s filmmaking history, its role in shaping Palestinian identity, and its ties to the wider Third Cinema movement.

The story of the archives of the Palestinian national movement reveals a narrative of exile and fragmentation that reflects the Palestinian experience itself.

All protagonists are removed from the original footage, leaving an empty setting formed by the town.

‘Sea of Stories’ explores the displacements and imagined returns of the Palestinian community in Lebanon throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The exhibition seeks to explore those journeys and trace these routes, opening a space for conversation on what return means for today’s Palestinian community in Lebanon.

The conversation with Fatou Diawara will be moderated by the music critic Bachir Sfeir to discover the artist and her musical achievements.

A fun and hands-on workshop to learn the ins and outs of screen-printing with Silkroad Atelier

Participating children will create their own illustrations to be printed on t-shirts and back sacks.

Themes under discussion include embroidery in the work of Intifada-era artists; the history of traveling PLO folklore exhibitions; the problematics of archiving oral histories of Palestine…

Palestinian market on the beautiful Dar El-Nimer terrace. Embroidered items and Palestinian foods will be on sale, with an open embroidery station for adults and activities for kids – shop and stitch in the sunshine.

Children’s Workshops Organised by Waraq and led by Studio Kawakeb, these hands-on workshops invite children to engage in an interactive learning experience by exploring the narratives behind Palestinian embroidery. Participants will collectively stitch a mural and transform authentic motifs into stop-motion animations.

At the Seams is the Palestinian Museum’s first international “satellite” exhibition at Dar el-Nimer for Arts and Culture curated by Rachel Dedman. The exhibition casts a critical look at the role of embroidery in shaping historic and contemporary Palestinian politics and culture.
