Icons: Between the incarnation and living tradition by Father Antoine Chouity

  • Dar El Nimer for Arts and Culture (map)

A special session with Fr. Antoine Chouity on Byzantine icons, exploring their meaning as a window into the mystery of the Incarnation and as a tool for prayer and contemplation. The audience will learn about the spiritual environment of the icon, its message directed to the faithful, and the principles of its creation, which combine symbolism and beauty.

Fr. Antoine Chouity, priest of the Prophet Elijah Parish of the Greek Orthodox in Sin El Fil, has devoted himself since 1986 to the art of Orthodox iconography. Between 1988 and 1990, he immersed himself in the Athonite iconographic tradition on Mount Athos, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop George Khodr and the support of His Grace Bishop Ephraim Kyriakos. There, he trained under the great iconographer of the Monastery of St. Nicholas, the current head of the monastery, Fr. Elder Arsenios.

Since then, Fr. Antoine has continued writing icons in response to the requests of churches and the faithful, with his works adorning many churches across Lebanon as well as private homes.
